Catalogue of the exhibition 'Soshana. Collector of Worlds'
The exhibition presents paintings by Soshana (born 1927 in Vienna), an Austrian artist of Jewish descent, whose output has received international acclaim. This is the first exposition of her works in Poland. The pictures presented in the exhibition were created between 1957 and 1994. They are a rather small, yet representative fragment of the huge work of this extremely prolific artist.
Soshana’s work can be described as a recording of the journey that she was constantly in since her and her family had to flee their hometown Vienna. It seems that this fact affected her whole life: in her mind the idea of homeland was replaced by a sort of blank space that she has since tried to fill. The sense of belonging to the particular spot on a map was replaced by freedom and ability to live in the world as a whole. This was reflected in many of her paintings, inspired by the culture of the countries she visited. This constant, almost compulsive moving from one place to another became not only the driving force of Soshana’s work; it became part of her cosmopolitan identity.
